Structure of a UKK single-level junction box

  • Rail-mount base: Designed to snap onto a DIN rail for easy installation and removal.
  • Input terminal: Usually one main input port for connecting the main power supply.
  • Output terminal: Typically one input with multiple outputs, used to distribute one main wire into several branch wires.
  • Conductor: Usually made of copper alloy or nickel-plated copper, responsible for conduction and power distribution.
  • Insulating housing: Commonly made of PA nylon or similar insulating materials, featuring flame resistance, heat resistance, and impact resistance.
  • Transparent cover: Makes it easy to check the internal wiring condition; some designs are openable or hinged.

Internal structure and materials

UKK terminal blocks typically use flame-retardant PA66 insulated housings, with internal conductive components mostly made of brass and nickel-plated. The fastening screws are generally made of high-strength steel with electroplated surfaces to balance insulation safety, conductivity, and mechanical strength.

This material is resistant to deformation or releasing toxic fumes under high temperatures or short circuits, effectively isolating ignition sources and preventing faults from escalating into fires.

Flame retardant rating and mechanism

UKK terminal housings typically meet the V-0 flame retardant standard, meaning they self-extinguish within 3 seconds of the ignition source being removed after contact with a flame, without dripping burning material or causing further spread.

This material is resistant to deformation or releasing toxic fumes under high temperatures or short circuits, effectively isolating ignition sources and preventing faults from escalating into fires.

UKK junction box wiring method

UKK typically uses DIN rail screw terminals/branch terminals. The connection method is very straightforward: first, disconnect the power, strip the wire ends, insert them into the terminal crimping position, and then tighten the screw to secure them.

If it is a flexible wire, it is usually more stable and safer to crimp the cold-pressed end first and then connect it to the terminal.

Frequently asked questions about UKK single-stage junction box

Can UKK single pole junction boxes be used for high currents?

Yes, but it depends on the rated current of the specific model. Common UKK models on the market include 80A, 125A, 160A, 250A, 400A, 500A, etc. Different specifications correspond to different current carrying capacities and cannot be mixed.

The common configuration is a flame-retardant insulating shell + brass or copper conductor. Some products will be surface-plated to improve conductivity and corrosion resistance. Material details of different manufacturers will vary.

Most conventional UKK single pole junction boxes are better suited for indoor distribution or cabinet installation. If it is used outdoors, additional considerations are usually required to be waterproof, moisture-proof, dustproof and corrosion-proof. If necessary, a protective box should be added or a higher protection level solution should be selected.

The most common are:

Wire diameter and terminal specifications do not match
Crimping/locking wires are not in place, resulting in looseness and heat generation
Conductor not fully inserted
Torque is too large or too small
Multiple stranded wires are not handled properly, resulting in virtual connections
These are typical failure points for terminal blocks and branch distribution blocks.

A slight temperature rise may exist when the power is on, but if it is obviously hot to the touch, the shell is discolored, and there is a burnt smell, it usually indicates an abnormality, such as overload, excessive contact resistance, loose wiring, small wire diameter, etc.

The premise is that the parameters of the product itself are compliant, the installation specifications are met, and the load does not exceed the standard. Industry data generally emphasizes that such power distribution components should be powered off during installation and maintenance, and the fixation, identification, and insulation status should be confirmed before being put into operation.

Can one enter and multiple exits be used? Yes, UKK itself is used for branching and distribution.
Can it be mounted on the guide rail? Most UKK series support DIN rail mounting.
Can it be used outdoors? It is not recommended to wear the regular model naked outdoors, and protection is required.
Will it burn? There are risks in incorrect selection, overloading, and loose crimping.
How to choose a model? Choose according to the current, wire diameter, number of outlet positions, and installation environment.

How to Maintain Terminal Blocks

Regular Inspection

  • Regularly inspect terminal blocks for signs of wear, corrosion, or loose connections.

Clean Terminal Blocks Regularly

  • Use a soft brush and compressed air to clean terminal blocks and remove any dirt, dust, or debris that may accumulate on the contact points.

If Any Loose Connection Is Found

  • If any connection becomes loose, use a screwdriver to tighten the screws to the manufacturer’s recommended torque value. This helps ensure a safe and reliable electrical connection.

Check for Overheating

  • Inspect terminal blocks for signs of overheating, such as discoloration or deformation. Overheating may be caused by excessive current or poor contact resistance, and should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage.

Always Use Properly Sized Terminal Blocks

  • Be sure to select the correct size and type of terminal block according to the application requirements. Using undersized terminal blocks may lead to overheating, poor contact, and other issues.

Troubleshoot Faulty Connections

  • If a faulty connection occurs, check the wiring for short circuits, open circuits, or incorrect positioning. Use a multimeter or other diagnostic tools to identify the root cause of the problem.

Follow the Manufacturer’s Guidelines

  • Always follow the terminal block manufacturer’s instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance to ensure safe and reliable performance.
